Much has been written of the so-called “Toronto Blessing” and our Synod has already issued a solemn warning against any countenancing of it declaring it to be “a dangerous and God dis-honouring movement”. Producing, as it apparently does, “a babel of subhuman and animal sounds and various forms of bizarre conduct”, it is not from God but from Satan. It saddens us to read in Belfast Newsletter that it has arrived in a Presbyterian Church in Magheragall bringing controversy and division in its wake. The majority of the elders in the church as well as a majority of the congregation, it is heartening to read, have opposed their minister’s introduction of a charismatic-style service featuring this phenomenon. The minister is expected to take leave of absence from his charge and the likelihood is that his pastorship in the South Antrim village will come to an end. It seems strange to us that the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church concerned should have difficulty in formulating and announcing an official view on the “Toronto Blessing”. If it had been less dilatory perhaps the troubles of the Magheragall congregation would not have arisen in the first place.
