Southern Presbytery Tribute to the late Rev A McPherson, Perth

The Southern Presbytery, at their meeting in Glasgow on 20 February 2001, resolved to place on record their sorrow and profound sense of loss on the death of their brother minister, Rev A McPherson, Perth, which sad event took place on 7 December 2000.

Mr McPherson became a minister of this Presbytery for the first time when he was inducted into the London Congregation on 4 April 1979. On 27 March 1992 he was translated to the joint Extension Charge of Perth, Stirling and Dundee. In both these charges, as throughout his ministry, Mr McPherson endeavoured faithfully to set before his hearers the precious doctrines of the Word of God which, by the blessing of the Holy Ghost, are able to make sinners wise unto salvation, through faith which is in Christ Jesus. As well as being diligent in preaching, he attended to the pastoral side of his work. Mr McPherson was a loyal minister of the Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland and exhibited, on many occasions, his concern for the spiritual prosperity of the Cause of Christ among us.

On 20 June 1989 he was appointed Clerk of this Presbytery and carried out his duties in his usual painstaking way.

Mr McPherson’s death brings to an end a ministry of thirty-nine years, twenty-one of which were served in this Presbytery. His place in the Presbytery and in the pulpit of the small congregation in Perth is now empty. The prayer of the Presbytery is that the Lord would raise up faithful ministers of the gospel to engage in the work of the Lord within the Presbytery.

The Presbytery express their sincere sympathy to his widow and son and hope the Lord will bless them with the comfort and strength which He is able to give.

Removed by Death

Another elder of longstanding has been taken away from the Church in this world. Mr Ian MacLeod of Dingwall passed away on March 1. We mourn his passing.

New Clerk for Southern Presbytery

Following the death of Rev A McPherson, the Southern Presbytery has appointed Rev Hugh M Cartwright, Edinburgh, as its new clerk.
