There are many deceitful things in the world. The wind is deceitful, the ocean is deceitful, the creature is deceitful, but the human “heart is deceitful above all things” (Jer 17:9), and in nothing, probably, more so than in the principles and motives which govern and sway it. O it is appalling to think what self-idolatry and self-seeking and self-complacence may reign in our hearts, prompt and govern our actions!
